研究により、ロバは強い持続的な友情グループを形成し、高い寛容性と親和行動を示すこと、また絆で結ばれたロバを分離すると、しばしば渇望行動や食欲不振という形で極度の苦痛を引き起こすことが確認された。The idea that donkeys form strong pair-bonds with other donkeys has been common knowledge among donkey owners for centuries, but remained largely anecdotal until recent studies began to identify observable behaviours that proved the theory.
The studies confirmed that donkeys formed strong and long-lasting friendship groups that manifested as high-tolerance and affiliative behaviour, and that separating bonded donkeys often caused extreme distress in the form of pining behaviour, and loss of appetite .
